Certified American Sign Language Interpreter

Deaf patients and/or their companions who use American Sign Language (ASL) are provided Sign Language interpreters at no charge. On-site interpreters are available for scheduled appointments at all locations, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) is also offered at all Cleveland Clinic hospitals and most Family Health Centers. This technology provides quick access to remote ASL interpreters.

A caregiver in this position works days, evenings, nights and weekends from 8:00am - 5:00pm or 5:00pm - 8 :00am .


A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Assist deaf patients, their families, clinical, professional staff by interpreting information through dialogue spoken in English to American Sign Language such as; patient histories, physician instructions to patient, patient questions for physician, nurse-patient dialogue.

  • Conduct preoperative or postoperative education and communicate the ramifications of accepting treatment or undergoing surgery, ensuring that patients understand their illness, its treatment, and their legal rights.

  • Use a broad spectrum of professional discipline and socioeconomic and cultural perspectives, relays sensitive information including diagnosis of terminal or severe illness, death of a family member during treatment, surgery, or information pertinent to ethnic, cultural, or religious values, morals, and customs.

  • Work with designated contact to coordinate and respond to patient requests and problem resolution to provide timely follow-up to complaints.


Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Anatomy and other medical terminology are attained through formal coursework or experience.

  • National Interpreter Certified (NIC), Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI), Certificate of Interpretation (CI) , or Certificate of Transliteration (CT) certifications through the RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf).

  • Valid Ohio State Drivers License and maintain automobile insurance coverage (30 days of start date).

  • Two years of professional interpreting experience.

  • Two years of A SL experience, preferably in a healthcare setting.

  • A b achelors degree and one year of related experience may substitute the experience requirement.


P referred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Bachelors degree .

  • Previous knowledge of Deaf Culture preferred, especially as it relates to communication and treatment.
