Description of Position: The Seasonal Winery Lab Technician at Edgefield is a full-time position whose primary job function is to assist winemakers with quality assurance, including processing and analyzing vineyard samples and conducting intake analysis of all incoming fruit. Although predominantly a lab position, the Lab Tech may also be called upon to perform cellar tasks, predominantly involving packaging, fruit processing, punch downs, and/or additions. This position will require lab experience, whether academic or applied, and knowledge of fermentation science. The Lab Technician will be expected to run and maintain the following analysis/equipment: Brix, pH, TA, Malic Acid, RS, Ammonia, PAN, ABV, and SO2.
This position is also responsible for keeping the lab clean, keeping organized lab records, inputting data into the winery database (Vintrace) and updating Excel spreadsheets. This position also requires a motivated individual with a flexible schedule and a willingness to engage in the winemaking process. The lab position is encouraged to partake in winemaking decisions, cellar management, and leadership roles. Each McMenamin employee will be expected to perform their job in a safe manner and report any safety concerns to management. Requirements of the Job: - Strong knowledge of fermentation science with some winery or cidery experience
- Some laboratory experience whether academic or applied
- Strong attention to detail and ability to precisely follow directions
- Enthusiasm for accuracy when it comes to lab results and the ability to solve technical/ analytical problems as they arise
- Proficient computer skillset with experience using Excel, Word, and a production software
- Ability to work well independently and multitask while keeping up with lab standards
- Proficiency when working quickly and efficiently to produce lab results promptly
- Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work and learn within constantly changing priorities
- Self-motivated, industrious, honest, and a high level of integrity
- A positive attitude and a demonstrated commitment to quality
- Flexible schedule and willingness to work overtime
- BS or AS in related field preferred
- Fork-lift or pallet jack experience a plus, but not required
- Must be 21 or older
Essential Job Functions: - Operate and maintain all necessary analytical and sampling equipment
- Maintain clean and organized lab records
- Daily use of Vintrace inputting lab results, inventory, work orders, and cellar movements
- Must have a value for diversity and the ability to work with individuals from different backgrounds
- Intermittent use of Excel and Word
- Assist winemakers with daily production management
- Limited cellar work as needed
- Clearly communicate with cellar staff and winemakers
- Ensure all standards for cleanliness and quality control are being met
- Ability to manage time and work independently
- Comfortable working outside in all weather conditions
- Ability to work at various heights, using ladders and stairs safely
- Comply with all winery safety policies and procedures
- Repetitive movements including bending, pushing, pulling, twisting, and stooping
