Position Description

X Energy, LLC is seeking a Nuclear Project Engineer responsible for the technical management of the complete engineering effort to design and develop Nuclear Systems through all development life cycle phases from concept to realization, including detail design, analysis, testing, procurement, construction, and commissioning. This role is responsible for documenting, capturing, and managing the technical, licensing, and programmatic requirements and configuration of the system from the highest level to the contract end item level.

Responsibilities:
  • Determine and manage stakeholder needs and expectations and translate them into technical requirements.
  • Define system architecture and derived requirements to produce a solution that can be implemented to enable a balanced and optimum result that considers all stakeholder requirements.
  • Generate a system solution that meets a set of needs and demonstrates that it is a credible and feasible solution.
  • Direct the development of mechanical/physical concepts, designs and develop process to create structures systems and components (SSCs).
  • Ensure that the lifecycle requirements are addressed at the correct point in the system design, e.g., manufacturability, testability, reliability, maintainability, safety, flexibility, interoperability, disposal, etc.
  • Perform functional analyses to verify that system capabilities meet the requirements.
  • Decompose higher-level functions to lower-levels and ensure traceable allocation of requirements to those functions.
  • Ensure proper component integration into the system as well as integration into the next level assembly.
  • Identify, define, manage, and control all system interfaces across system or system element boundaries.
  • Maintain design integrity by ensuring that the overall coherence and cohesion of the "evolving" design of a system is maintained, in a verifiable manner, throughout the lifecycle, and retains the original intent.
  • Validate the system design by ensuring that the operational capability of the system meets the needs of the customer/user - "did we build the right system?".
  • Ensure coherent integration of engineering specialties into the design at the right time. Concentrations include reliability, maintainability, testability, integrated logistics support, producibility, electromagnetic compatibility, human factors, conventional safety, and nuclear safety.
  • Identify, report, disposition, and manage all technical risks associated with system design and development. Additionally develop, implement, and manage appropriate risk mitigation strategies.
  • Manage and direct the system development; this includes planning, monitoring, and controlling of the complete engineering effort through all the development life cycles.
  • Write and oversee development of design documentation including, but not limited to, design basis documents, technical reports, calculations, design descriptions and drawings in accordance with applicable procedures.
  • Develop the technical content for, and support the procurement of, material, equipment, and services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by manager.
Minimum Education/Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in nuclear engineering or related technical discipline, Master's preferred.
  • 5 plus years Engineering experience.
  • Experience in design of nuclear instrumentation systems preferred.
  • Relevant experience in HTGR technology is preferred.
  • Knowledge of nuclear reactor design and operation, reactor kinetics and dynamics, and radiation interactions with matter.
  • Familiar with software for nuclear simulation and modelling such as MCNP, SCALE and GADRAS.
  • Understanding of principles of radiation detection and measurement.
  • Basic understanding of system requirements management, and verification.
  • Basic understanding of Systems Engineering processes, as well as relevant aspects of nuclear power plant licensing, regulatory, quality, and safety requirements.
  • Independent and self-motivated (take ownership of work).
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with Nuclear Regulators and other government oversight officials.
  • Good leadership skills including effective management skills (planning, organizing, coordinating, directing).
  • Professional presentation and strong communication skills.
  • Good analytical and organizational problem-solving skills, lateral thinking skills.
  • Ability to recognize risks/opportunities immediately, quantify impacts and recommend appropriate solutions.
  • Decisive decision maker regarding conflicting technical issues and requirements.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Outlook, Teams, or similar software and .pdf editing and markup tools.
