Job Description

The University of Miami Health System Department of Lennar - Perioperative Services has an exciting opportunity for a full time Surgical Assistant (H) to work at Lennar Foundation Medical Center in Coral Gables. The incumbent supports surgeons during surgical procedures. More specifically, the incumbent provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. In addition, the Surgical Assistant (H) performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. Core job functions include maintaining established University and hospital directives and safety, environmental, and infection control standards; preserving current knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment; maintaining hemostasis by direct pressure, use, and application of appropriate surgical instruments, placement of ties and suture ligatures, application of chemical hemostatic agents, or other necessary measures; assisting with retracting tissues and performing wound closure; preparing surgical site and draping and positioning patient to obtain the best exposure for the surgical procedure; providing visualization of the operative site by placing and securing retractors, packing with sponges, manipulating tissue, suctioning, irrigating, and manipulating suture materials; facilitating volume replacement or auto-transfusion techniques; selecting and applying appropriate wound dressing; ensuring that drainage systems are appropriately secured to tissue; adhering to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguarding University assets. The list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded as necessary. Core qualifications include graduation from an accredited program, four-year degree in related field, or medical school graduate (foreign or domestic); certification in relevant specialty or field; minimum 2 years of relevant experience; skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail; ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines; ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion; ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary; commitment to the University’s core values; ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
