Compensation: $75,000 - $90,000 (salary/exempt)


The Wildlife Biologist is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the Department's wildlife programs. Those include ungulate, seabird, waterbird, invertebrate, and marine wildlife monitoring and conservation; other wildlife monitoring (including game, invasive predator monitoring, and other native- and non-native wildlife monitoring); non-native predator control; coordinating protection of native species with the Wildlife Control and Plant Conservation teams; and coordinating point for all programs relating to bats, snails, marine mammals, and turtles. The position provides technical expertise to other projects and departments of the company on wildlife matters.

Supervises: Assistant Wildlife Biologist, Wildlife and Biosecurity Specialist and Wildlife Technicians.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties

  • Plan, coordinate and implement wildlife programs and budgets, including conservation of protected species, game and ungulate monitoring, invasive species management, and marine debris monitoring and management.
  • Lead a diverse team of professional and field staff, reinforcing company values, teamwork, professional conduct, and quality work, and helping to mentor and develop staff.
  • Oversee and participate in survey and monitoring programs for seabirds, waterbirds, forest birds, invertebrates, invasive predators, ungulate populations, marine wildlife, and other native and non-native animals. Develop, design, and implement research and monitoring methodologies, and conduct statistical analysis of various datasets.
  • Oversee and participate in biosecurity inspections of incoming plants and other organic materials.
  • Coordinate the preparing, maintaining, and deployment of monitoring devices and equipment.
  • Monitor and track actions and results, record and enter data for reporting and project tracking, analyze and summarize data, create and manage spatial data and maps, prepare written reports and oral presentations.
  • Closely coordinate with Plant Conservation program on various efforts, including habitat protection and improvement for ecosystem enhancement of priority wildlife areas.
  • Assist in the training and supervision of other Departmental personnel as may be assigned to participate in wildlife program-led work. Supervision may include volunteers and contractors.
  • Support outreach, education, and trainings for internal and external audiences about wildlife issues.
  • Assist in the preparation of grant applications and prepare progress, job completion and other reports as required and in support of the Department. Assist in writing, review, and administrative processing of cooperative agreements between the Department and other agencies and private organizations, as these cooperative agreements pertain to wildlife management and conservation.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and permit issues for protected wildlife work; prepare applications and required reporting documents.
  • Evaluate development projects for their effects on wildlife and make recommendations for future development BMPs.
  • Oversee wildlife stabilization program, including maintaining permitted stabilization area, data collection, communication, and response to calls for rescue and salvage of injured or downed wildlife.
  • Coordinate and integrate wildlife programs within the Department and with partner entities.
  • Fly in and work near helicopters on an as-needed basis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualification/Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully as a productive and collaborative leader of people of diverse cultures, ages, and educational backgrounds.
  • Bachelor's degree in wildlife biology or other natural resources field from an accredited college or university (Master's degree or higher preferred).
  • Minimum of three years of supervisory experience.
  • Minimum of five years of field experience in game and wildlife conservation and management.
  • Strong safety ethic.
  • Able to strategize and make effective decisions quickly.
  • Able to maintain a positive attitude and professional conduct under pressure.
  • Knowledgeable in the science and techniques of wildlife research and management, including survey methods and tools, geospatial mapping and analysis, and statistical analysis of various types of datasets.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills, and the ability to write clear, concise reports.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of constituencies, including government agencies, community members, and students.
  • Able to use computers, GPS, tablets, and other electronic devices.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, and able to learn in-house database systems and programming of remote monitoring devices.
  • Able to drive 4-wheel drive vehicles.

Preferred Job-Specific Experience and Abilities:

  • Experience in Hawaii conservation or similar geographies/similar species.
  • Knowledge and experience with L?na'i natural resources and community.
  • Experience working with county, state and federal agencies and organizations.
  • Experience working under and reporting on state and federal protected species permits.
  • Experience with community and partner engagement and relationship-building.
  • Experience with stabilizing injured wildlife.

Required Work Cards/Certifications:

  • Valid Driver's License and successful review of Motor Vehicle Record.
  • Ability to obtain Wilderness First Responder and Red Cross First Aid certification.
  • Ability to successfully complete ATV and UTV training.
  • Ability to successfully complete helicopter safety training.
  • Ability to successfully complete firearms training and obtain relevant certificates (HI Hunter's Safety, Maui County Permit to Acquire).

Physical Requirements:

  • Standing and sitting for long periods of time indoors and outdoors.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk and hear.
  • Required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distant vision and color vision.
  • Ability to hike on uneven terrain carrying up to 30 lbs for 3-5 miles in inclement weather.
